Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Phlebotomy Assistant to collect blood specimens for laboratory procedures and perform associated tasks in the outpatient lab. You will draw blood by venipuncture or finger/heel sticks, transport specimens, and prepare samples for analysis.

You will also perform EKGs using GE carts and MUSE software, register patients in the HIS, and verify insurance for outpatients. Collaboration with staff and strict adherence to safety policies are essential.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Certified phlebotomy course completed.
• Minimum 120 hours of clinical experience.

Responsibilities

• Identify patients using two identifiers (name and date of birth).
• Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture using standard equipment.
• Respond to STAT and timed blood work requests within defined windows.
• Perform EKGs using GE EKG carts and MUSE software.
• Enter patient data into the HIS and verify insurance for outpatients.
• Prepare, process, label and store specimens for analysis.
• Transport specimens to the laboratory maintaining specimen integrity.
• Provide guidance to Phlebotomy students and new staff.
