Job summary

Brown University Health is seeking a Phlebotomy Technician to obtain blood and other specimens in a hospital setting. You will transport specimens, perform basic clerical duties, and help educate patients on procedures.

The role requires meticulous data entry and adherence to infection control procedures. The position involves early morning shifts, weekend coverage, and holiday rotations in Providence, RI, with a starting hourly wage of $29.14.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through NACLS or completion of a phlebotomy program with internship showing 100 successful venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of certification, 5+ years of direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Must be able to perform venipuncture on adults, children and infants.
• Strong interpersonal skills to explain procedures and reassure patients.
• Clerical skills to enter data and maintain records.

Responsibilities

• Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures per test priority.
• Use labels and reference the Pathology Handbook to ensure correct specimen collection.
• Verify patient identity and prepare patients for collection.
• Collect blood samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture.
• Perform coagulation tests and prepare samples for transport.
• Maintain records of sample procurement and client information.
• Provide patients with required forms and instructions for tests.
• Enter patient data into the department system.
