Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a Phlebotomy Technician to collect blood and other specimens under supervision of the Pathology Manager and Phlebotomy Supervisor. You will also transport specimens, complete basic records, and perform clerical tasks to interview and instruct patients.

Role requires handling specimens with care, preparing patients, and entering data into the department system while adhering to universal precautions and hospital policies. Commitment to accuracy is essential.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through a recognized program or NACA accreditation is required.
• An internship with 100 venipunctures is preferred or 6 months of phlebotomy experience in lieu of internship.
• If no certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.

Responsibilities

• Schedule venipunctures or capillary punctures based on test type and priority.
• Use labels and reference procedures to ensure proper specimen collection and containers.
• Verify patient identity and prep per procedures.
• Collect blood samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture and inform staff of deviations.
• Perform coagulation tests and prepare samples for transport.
• Maintain records of specimen procurement and complete registration information.
• Provide patients with test forms and instructions for preparation.
• Enter patient data into computer systems and assist with billing corrections as needed.
