Job summary

Brown University Health seeks a phlebotomy technician to collect blood and specimens from pediatric and adult patients on outpatient units. You will register patients, collect samples, and manage documentation in a hospital setting aligned with safety and privacy policies.

Position requires phlebotomy certification or substantial experience; training and adherence to universal precautions are essential. Work is Monday–Friday in Cranston, RI, with standard day shift hours.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Phlebotomy certificate through NAACLS and/or completion of a phlebotomy program with internship demonstrating 100 successful venipunctures.
• In lieu of internship, 6 months of phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• In lieu of phlebotomy certification, 5+ years direct phlebotomy experience may be considered.
• Ability to perform venipuncture techniques and capillary puncture on adults, children and infants.
• Interpersonal skills to explain procedures and allay fears and anxiety.
• Familiarity with aging processes and cultural patterns in care.
• Clerical skills to prepare and maintain records and enter data.
• Phlebotomy certification is required.

Responsibilities

• Register patients and order tests following policies for patient identification, verification, and documentation.
• Perform venipuncture and collect specimens, ensuring proper containers and patient preparation.
• Manage ABN documentation, including codes, signatures, and scanning.
• Answer phones, file records, maintain daily checklists, and deliver reports.
• Maintain standing orders for expiration and renewals; confirm completion of tasks.
• Provide patients with test forms and prep instructions; contact for repeat tests if needed.
• Schedule venipunctures or capillary draws and label specimens correctly.
• Ensure specimens are handled per policies and universal precautions.
• Collect additional specimen types as required and track samples.
• Label, wrap, and transport samples; maintain procurement records.
• Follow hospital policies and universal precautions; perform other duties as assigned.
