Job Description

The Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and regulatory standards.

The Phlebotomist provides expert phlebotomy services, demonstrating excellent customer service and communication skills. Must function effectively as part of a team that prioritizes “Patients First”.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Performing phlebotomy and lab specimen collections according to age-related standards and departmental protocols.
  2. Demonstrating the AIDET model and ensuring patient safety to minimize errors.
  3. Receiving, reviewing, and entering physician orders accurately into multiple systems.
  4. Providing post-phlebotomy patient care and communication.
  5. Processing specimens promptly to maintain sample integrity, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging.
  6. Monitoring refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA records, reporting issues as needed.
  7. Understanding and maintaining lab equipment, following up on outstanding orders, and communicating with staff regarding specimen collection and results.
  8. Maintaining a safe work environment, adhering to biohazard waste procedures, and ensuring proper waste storage and disposal.
  9. Performing clerical lab duties such as order entry, result verification, patient info retrieval, and inventory management.
  10. Using resources efficiently and participating in efforts to reduce costs and streamline processes.
  11. Completing continuing education and competency assessments.
  12. Demonstrating teamwork and professionalism in interactions.
  13. Applying critical thinking and sound judgment to resolve challenges.
  14. Adhering to organizational policies and ethical practices.
  15. Performing additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a recognized organization, training from a medical institution, or one or more years of healthcare experience, or CMA certification.

Preferred:

  • Experience with diverse patient populations.
  • Experience processing lab specimens and using centrifuges.
  • Familiarity with EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
