Job Description
The Phlebotomist reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Phlebotomist provides expert phlebotomy services and must demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills. The phlebotomist must have the ability to function as part of a highly effective team that consistently puts “Patients First”.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to venipuncture collection, specimen processing, order entry in multiple systems, verification of test result receipt, patient information retrieval, and lab reception/clerical duties.

**Responsibilities:**

  • Performs phlebotomy and other lab specimen collections per age-related standards and departmental policies.
  • Demonstrates AIDET model and optimizes patient safety to reduce errors.
  • Receives and reviews physician orders; ensures all necessary information is included for lab services.
  • Provides appropriate post-phlebotomy patient care.
  • Processes specimens promptly to maintain sample integrity, including labeling, centrifuging, aliquoting, freezing, and packaging.
  • Reviews refrigerator temperatures and QC/QA records, reports issues appropriately.
  • Operates and maintains lab equipment; follows up on outstanding orders and communicates as needed.
  • Notifies Laboratory and/or Physician of specimen procurement issues.
  • Maintains a safe work environment, adhering to biohazard waste procedures.
  • Performs clerical duties such as order entry, result verification, patient info retrieval, and inventory management.
  • Uses resources efficiently and participates in cost-reduction efforts.
  • Completes continuing education and competency assessments.
  • Demonstrates teamwork and professional interaction.
  • Applies critical thinking and sound judgment in challenging situations.
  • Complies with organizational policies on ethical practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
**Qualifications:**
Required:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Phlebotomy certification from a recognized organization, training from a medical institution, or one or more years of healthcare experience; CMA certification is also acceptable.
Preferred:
  • Experience with diverse patient populations in phlebotomy.
  • Experience with lab specimen processing and handling centrifuges.
  • Familiarity with medical EMR systems.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
