Position Summary
Outpatient Pharmacist reporting to the Outpatient Pharmacy Administrative Director and/or Pharmacy Manager, responsible for the compounding and dispensing of prescribed pharmaceuticals, medication verification, order entry, and oversight of pharmacy operations in accordance with department policies and applicable regulations.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of medication.
- Verify all patient information before filling prescriptions.
- Compound prescribed medications, package and label.
- Perform quality checks on prescriptions for correct dosage and drug interactions.
- Provide consultation to customers upon filling prescriptions.
- Dispense medical and surgical products as prescribed.
- Record prescriptions dispensed, including poisons, narcotics, and other restricted drugs.
- Perform order entry of prescriptions into the pharmacy management systems (QS1, etc.).
- Supervise pharmacy staff, including customer service representatives and pharmacy technicians, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and applicable laws.
- Provide training, orientation, and staff re‑assignment for optimal operations.
- Coach and develop pharmacy staff, identify training gaps, assign progressive tasks, and assist in career development.
- Contact physicians and benefit providers to process prescriptions.
- Complete third‑party insurance forms and other paperwork.
- Maintain a professional and confidential environment for customers at all times.
- Comply with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements, including DEMPOS (billing, dispensing, and training).
- Provide drug education and counseling to patients as outlined in department policies and procedures.
- Provide in‑service education to pharmacy staff, students, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare practitioners as needed.
- Attend and participate in department staff development conferences or other activities related to staff development.
- Develop competencies related to the position.
- Maintain professional and specialized competency through continued education, including attendance of at least one regional or national meeting per year.
- Conform to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including patient rights, to provide excellent customer service and patient care.
- Utilize hospital behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the mission and goals.
- Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
- Perform other related tasks as needed.
Job Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy.
- Advanced degree (e.g., PharmD, M.S., or MBA) preferred.
- Licensure to practice pharmacy in Massachusetts by the hire date.
- APHA Certified Immunizer within 12 months of starting this position.
- Two to three years of related experience; QS1 experience preferred.
- Comprehensive understanding of procedures, systems, and equipment used by pharmacists and technicians.
- High level of analytical ability, organizational and personal management skills.
- Experience revising and/or implementing information systems.
- Excellent interpersonal and telephone communication skills.
- Professional conduct and demeanor.
- Proficiency with standard software used in healthcare office settings (MS Word, Excel, web browser, etc.).
Compensation and Benefits
Compensation Range: $43.03 – $62.50 per hour (subject to revision based on geographic location and individual qualifications).
