Position Summary
Under the supervision of the Outpatient Pharmacy Administrative Director and/or Pharmacy Manager and according to department policies, procedures, and guidelines, responsible for the compounding and dispensing of prescribed pharmaceuticals. Responsible for checking all medication prior to dispensing and delivery. Position: CHC Pharmacist, Department: BMC Pharmacy at SBCHC, Schedule: Part Time, Per Diem, Outpatient.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare or supervise the preparation of medication
- Verify all patient information before filling a prescription
- Compound prescribed medications, package and label
- Perform quality checks on prescriptions for correct dosage, drug interactions, etc.
- Provide consultation to customers upon filling a prescription
- Dispense medical and surgical products as prescribed
- Record prescriptions dispensed, including poisons, narcotics, and other restricted drugs
- Perform order entry of prescriptions into the pharmacy management systems (QS1, etc.)
- Supervise pharmacy staff including customer service representatives and pharmacy technicians in accordance with federal, state, and other applicable laws and regulations
- Provide training, orientation, re‑assign staff as needed for optimal operations
- Provide direction and development to pharmacy staff by coaching, identifying training gaps, assigning progressively challenging tasks, and assisting in career development
- Contact physicians and benefit providers as necessary to process a prescription
- Complete third‑party insurance forms and other paperwork
- Provide a professional and confidential environment for customers at all times
- Comply with accreditation, legal, regulatory, and safety requirements, including DEMPOS (billing, dispensing and training)
- Provide drug education and counseling to patients as outlined in department policies and procedures
- Provide in‑service education to pharmacy staff, students, nurses, physicians and other healthcare practitioners, as needed
- Attend and participate in department staff development conferences or other activities related to staff development
- Develop competencies related to position and maintain professional competency through continued education (attendance of at least one regional or national meeting per year)
- Follow established hospital infection control and safety procedures
- Perform other related tasks as needed
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from an accredited college of pharmacy. Advanced degree (e.g., PharmD, M.S., or MBA) preferred.
- Licensure: Licensure to practice pharmacy in the State of Massachusetts by hire date. APHA Certified Immunizer within 12 months of starting this position.
- Experience: Two to three years related experience. QS1 experience preferred.
- Knowledge & Skills: Comprehensive understanding of pharmacy procedures, systems, equipment, and proficiency in pharmacist duties; high analytical ability; organizational and personal management skills; experience with information systems; excellent interpersonal and telephone communication; professional conduct; proficiency with standard software (MS Word, Excel, web browser). Immunization experience preferred. Knowledge of federal 340B program and LEAN/Six Sigma concepts highly desirable. QS1 experience preferred.
Compensation
Compensation Range: $43.03 – $62.50 per hour (approximate). Base pay is determined by qualifications, experience, skills, and certifications.
