Job summary

UMass Memorial Health in Worcester, MA is seeking an Observation Assistant for the Emergency Department Pediatrics. The role focuses on constant observation of high‑risk patients, safety checks, and supporting nursing staff in delivering compassionate care.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate or equivalent.
• Must complete de-escalation training.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Responsibilities

• Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by the designated RN.
• Assists the patient to get undressed, removes items that may pose safety risk, and secures personal belongings per unit policy.
• Monitors patient safety checks at required intervals for an assigned group of patients.
• Escorts and supervises patients in the bathroom, assists with meals, and de-escalates patients as needed.
• Notifies nurse of changes in patient activity, mood, behavior, or requests for medication.
• Reinforces safety precautions and fall prevention; participates in restraints under direction when required.
• Documents patient behavior and safety checks in the patient’s chart and provides handoff communication.
• Performs a variety of duties to support patient care and the department’s operations.
