Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is hiring an Observation Assistant for overnight coverage in the Emergency Department Pediatrics unit. You will provide constant patient observation, safety checks, and de-escalation support under RN direction.

This role supports care delivery in a high-acuity setting and requires strong English communication and behavioral safety skills. Requires HS diploma, BLS, and de-escalation training; shift is 11p-7a with 32 hours weekly, non-exempt status.

Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Must complete de-escalation training.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or HeartSaver certification.

Responsibilities

• Provides constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned by RN.
• Assists patients with undressing and secures belongings per unit policy.
• Monitors patient safety checks and reports changes to RN.
• Escorts patients in bathrooms and assists with meals as directed.
• Prevents unsafe movement and intervenes within scope as needed.
• Uses de-escalation and may participate in restraints under supervision.
• Documents patient behavior and safety checks in the chart.
