Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems seeks a Patient Surgery Scheduling Coordinator to organize surgery and follow-up appointments for multiple physicians across ACC, Main OR, Stony Point and Southside Regional. You will handle preauthorization and precertification for all surgeries.

Respond to patient, carrier and PCP inquiries by phone or mail, maintain master physician schedules, and collaborate with billing to resolve denials and resubmit appeals when needed.

Qualifications

• Minimum of two (2) years experience in a medical office/acute care setting to include the use of medical terminology, customer service and appointment scheduling.
• Minimum of three (3) years experience with third party medical insurance, HMO and managed care.
• Education: High School Diploma or equivalent, Associate Degree preferred.

Responsibilities

• Maintain master schedules for each physician by scheduling surgery cases and managing departmental block time.

The Patient Surgery Scheduling Coordinator coordinates and schedule appointments for surgeries and follow-up appointments for multiple physicians at multiple sites (VCUHS ACC, Main OR, Stony Point and Southside Regional). This job is responsible for preauthorization/precertification of all surgeries for assigned physicians at all patient locations.
The Patient Surgery Scheduling Coordinator responds to all inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and PCP's by telephone and/ or written correspondence using quality customer service. This role works with department billing staff to investigate all denials, and with assistance from providers, resubmits appeals as necessary.

Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of two (2) years experience in a medical office/acute care setting to include the use of medical terminology, customer service and appointment scheduling
Minimum of three (3) years experience with third party medical insurance, HMO and managed care
Experience PREFERRED:
Four (4) years previous experience insurgery scheduling
Previous experience with CPT and ICD-9 coding for medical claims processing
Work experience using GE/IDX, Cerner
Education/training REQUIRED:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Education/training PREFERRED:
Associate Degree in Business Management or closely related field from an accredited program
Independent action(s) required:
Maintains master schedules for each physician by scheduling surgery cases and managing departmental block time.
Able to use judgment and critical thinking skills to ensure minimal disruption and optimal use of block time.

Compensation Range: $17.50 - $26.39
