Job summary

Mercy Medical Center Mt. Shasta is seeking a Patient Registration Representative to ensure a positive patient experience during registration. You will identify patients, collect demographics, verify insurance, determine financial liability, and explain hospital policies and patient rights to families.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of registration requirements across areas, enter accurate demographics into the ADT system, and ensure medical records are not duplicated for regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 1+ year in hospital patient registration or revenue cycle roles.
  • Experience requesting and processing financial payments.
  • Thorough understanding of insurance policies and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to perform basic math for payments.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills.

Responsibilities

  • Identify patients, collect accurate demographics, verify insurance, determine financial liability, and explain hospital policies to families.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of registration requirements across units (Main Admitting, OP, ED, Maternity, Rehab).
  • Ensure complete and accurate entry of demographic information into the ADT system at registration time.
  • Properly identify patients to prevent duplicate medical record numbers.
  • Review accounts for accuracy and required documentation for compliance.
  • Meet CMS billing requirements and document completion in the system for audit purposes.
  • Enter required data into the ADT system with emphasis on demographic and financial accuracy for reimbursement.

Job Summary and Responsibilities

As a Patient Registration Representative, you will ensure a positive patient experience during registration, employing excellent customer service. Every day you will identify patients, collect accurate demographics, verify insurance, determine/collect financial liability, and explain hospital policies and patient rights to families. To be successful, you will demonstrate exceptional customer service, meticulous attention to detail in data/insurance, and strong communication, crucial for patient satisfaction and reimbursement.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of specific registration requirements for all areas, including but not limited to: Main Admitting, OP Registration, ED Registration, Maternity, and Rehabilitation units
  • Ensures complete, accurate and timely entry of demographic information into the ADT system at the time of registration
  • Properly identifies the patient to ensure medical record numbers are not duplicated
  • Responsible for reviewing assigned accounts to ensure accuracy and required documentation is obtained and complete
  • Meet CMS billing requirements for the completion of the MSP, issuance of the Important Message from Medicare, issuance of the Observation Notice, and other requirements, as applicable and documenting completion within the hospital's information system for regulatory compliance and audit purposes
  • Collects and enters required data into the ADT system with emphasis on accuracy of demographic and financial information in order to ensure appropriate reimbursement
Job Requirements
Required
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Minimum one year of experience working in a hospital Patient Registration department, physician office setting, healthcare insurance company, revenue cycle vendor, and/or other revenue cycle related roles (a applicable education and/or training can be used to balance a lack of experience)
  • Experience in requesting and processing financial payments
  • Thorough understanding of insurance policies and procedures
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Able to perform basic mathematics for payment calculation
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills
Preferred
  • Knowledge of charity care programs as well as the various government and non-government programs
