Job summary

UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) to support nursing staff on the unit with essential patient care tasks and vigilant observation. The role emphasizes compassionate daily living support, safety, and respectful interactions with patients, families, and team members.

The position requires effective communication, basic medical terminology knowledge, and the ability to stay calm in emergencies.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write and communicate in English clearly.
• Basic computer skills required.
• Basic Medical Terminology knowledge expected.
• Must be able to remain calm under stress or in emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Provide clear, timely communication to the RN regarding observations and changes in patients.
• Maintain constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned.
• Assist in maintaining a safe environment and de-escalate situations as directed.
• Assist patients with daily living activities (hygiene, mobility, meals).
• Assist in moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients safely.
• Perform patient safety checks and follow restraints policy when needed.
