Preferred Qualifications

Role Purpose

The Patient Access Representative is often the first point of contact for patients and must exemplify high standards of customer service, compassion, and professionalism. The role involves facilitating patient entry into BJC facilities, requiring emotional intelligence and the ability to make personal connections. Accurate collection of demographics, insurance information, benefit verification, and point-of-service collection are critical to maximize reimbursements and prevent denials. Correctly selecting the patient from the master person index (MPI) is vital for patient safety. The team member must maintain knowledge of insurance carriers, Medicare guidelines, and relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  1. Use critical thinking to solve problems, anticipate patient needs, and respond appropriately. Communicate professionally with patients, families, and staff in person, via computer, or by phone to ensure a positive experience, maximize reimbursements, and minimize denials. Ensure accurate patient records by correctly selecting the MPI.
  2. Handle hospital registration and scheduling within multiple BJC systems. Verify insurance, scan and retrieve documents, confirm orders, and provide patients with instructions and financial information. Collect applicable patient payments.
  3. Understand and enforce hospital compliance with regulations such as Medicare Secondary Payer (MSP), HIPAA, Patient Bill of Rights, Advance Directives, EMTALA, and JCAHO standards. Ensure HIPAA acknowledgment from patients.
  4. This is a safety-sensitive position requiring alertness and safe work practices.
Minimum Requirements

Education: High School Diploma or GED

Experience: No experience required

Preferred Requirements

Education: Associate's Degree

Experience: Less than 2 years

Licenses & Certifications: CHAA
