Job summary

Tenet Healthcare's DMC Children's Hospital of Michigan seeks an Access Specialist to manage patient access, appointments and pre-authorization coordination. You will verify insurance, collect demographics and assist with referrals and authorizations for both scheduled and unscheduled services.

You will explain hospital forms, educate patients on financial liabilities, handle cash postings, and support departmental efficiency while maintaining excellent customer service.

Qualifications

• Three or more years prior work experience in patient access, hospital registration, health insurance or related area.
• Two or more years prior experience in Customer Service or related call center environment preferred.
• Advanced knowledge of third‑party payers requirements, reimbursements and copayments/deductible collections.
• Course in medical terminology required.

Responsibilities

• Be the system navigator and point of contact for patients and families regarding appointments and authorizations.
• Obtain insurance, medical and demographic data and verify coverage with third-party payors.
• Secure referrals/authorizations for scheduled and unscheduled services as needed.
• Explain and secure hospital forms (Advance Directives, consent, EMTALA, etc.) and scan records into EMR.
• Educate patients about financial liabilities and arrange payment plans when applicable.
