Job summary

Emerus is seeking a Patient Access Specialist to serve as a liaison among patients, payers, and the health care team. You will collect demographic information, verify insurance, and secure out-of-pocket payments to maximize hospital reimbursement.

Responsibilities include ensuring accurate patient identity, facilitating smooth revenue cycle processing, and coordinating transfers when needed. A strong customer-service mindset and knowledge of insurance plans are essential.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• 2 years of patient registration and insurance verification experience in a health care setting are preferred.
• Emergency Department registration experience is strongly preferred.
• Knowledge of insurance plans (HMO, PPO, POS, Medicare, Medicaid) and payors is required.
• Basic understanding of medical terminology.
• Excellent customer service.
• Proficiency with MS Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).
• Fluency in English; bilingual in Spanish is required in El Paso market.

Responsibilities

• Maintain compliance with EMTALA, DNV, HIPAA and other regulations in Admissions and Medical Records handling.
• Provide excellent customer service and build quality relationships with customers.
• Identify and triage patients upon arrival to the hospital to protect patient safety.
• Answer phones professionally, record messages and relay to staff.
• Obtain signatures on forms and consents as required.
• Enter complete demographic information to facilitate revenue cycle processing.
• Verify insurance benefits for all plans and correct payor entry in the system.
• Obtain insurance authorizations as required by plans where applicable.
• Assist in maximizing collections at the time of service in a courteous manner.
• Scan and file registration and clinical documents into the system.
• Coordinate patient transfers to other hospitals when needed.
• Respond to medical record requests from patients, physicians and hospitals.
• Maintain cash drawer per policies.
• Log all patients, payments, transfers and admissions; maintain visitor/vendor logs.
