Job summary

HCA Houston Healthcare Medical Center is seeking a Pathologists' Assistant to support surgical pathology services. The role involves organizing frozen section and gross examination workflows, collaborating with on-site pathologists to set priorities, and assisting with specimen triage and grossing accuracy.

The ideal candidate holds a Bachelor's degree (Masters preferred) in Pathologists' Assistant, with 1-2 years in a pathology or histology lab, and ASCP certification preferred.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree is required.
• 1-2 years experience in a pathology or histology lab is required.
• ASCP certification is preferred.
• 3-5 years grossing experience in a hospital setting may be accepted in lieu of ASCP or master's degree.

Responsibilities

• Organize and ensure workflow efficiency in frozen section and gross examination areas.
• Collaborate with on-site pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
• Take instruction from on-site pathologists regarding grossing technique and quality assessment.
• Share relevant information with fellow pathologists to enhance productivity and knowledge.
• Triage specimens, dictate gross findings, and refer tissue sections for microscopic review.
• Select tissue for microscopic study and determine appropriate fixatives.
• Perform specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification; coordinate procedures and records.
• Maintain records of dissections and dictations; assist in compiling reports.
• Photograph specimens for instruction and documentation; perform photo microscopy for interdepartmental conferences.
• Perform other related duties and adhere to Code of Conduct and Mission and Value Statement.
