Job Summary

The Pathologist Assistant / Pathology Assistant is a staff position responsible for assisting pathologists in the performance of surgical pathology services. Under the general supervision of the pathologist, the assistant works independently when performing professional duties related to the examination and/or preparation of surgical pathology specimens.

Responsibilities
  • Organize and ensure the efficient workflow in the frozen section and gross examination areas.
  • Collaborate closely with on‑site pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
  • Follow instructions from on‑site pathologists regarding grossing technique and quality assessment.
  • Share relevant information with other HCA pathologist assistants to facilitate productivity and broaden knowledge.
  • Triage specimens received from surgery, dictate gross findings using appropriate terminology, and refer tissue sections for microscopic review by a pathologist or resident.
  • Select and identify tissue for microscopic study, determining the proper fixative solution.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification; maintain and coordinate specimen records for these procedures; submit requests for special histological procedures and stains when appropriate.
  • Maintain records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; assist in compiling reports for surgical pathology; label and store gross tissue specimens.
  • Photograph specimen samples for instruction and documentation.
  • Photomicrograph cases considered for interdepartmental conferences or teaching purposes; keep accurate records of all gross and microscopic photographs.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; master’s in Pathology Assistant highly preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in a pathology or histology laboratory setting.
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred.
  • 3–5 years of grossing experience in a hospital setting acceptable in lieu of ASCP certification or a master’s degree.
