Job summary

The Pathologists' Assistant at HCA Houston Healthcare supports pathologists in surgical pathology services under pathologist supervision. The role requires independent work in grossing and tissue handling to ensure accurate specimen processing.

Responsibilities include organizing workflow in frozen and gross areas, prioritizing cases with on-site pathologists, and maintaining complete records and documentation for reports and teaching materials.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Masters in Pathologists’ Assistant
• 1–2 years’ experience in a pathology or histology laboratory setting
• Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred
• 3–5 years’ grossing experience in a hospital setting accepted in lieu of ASCP Certification or master's degree

Responsibilities

• Organize and streamline workflow in frozen section and gross examination areas.
• Collaborate with on-site Pathologists to determine grossing priorities.
• Dictate gross findings and refer tissue sections for microscopic review as needed.
• Maintain records of dissections and dictations; assist in compiling surgical pathology reports.
• Photograph specimen samples for instructional and documentation purposes.
• Adhere to Code of Conduct and Mission and Value Statement.
