Job summary

Akron Children’s is seeking a part-time Medical Assistant to provide clinical and administrative support under a Provider or Licensed Nurse. The role includes preparing patients, taking vital signs, phlebotomy, and assisting with minor procedures in a school health setting.

Responsibilities include recording data, lab specimen handling, EMR documentation, and effective communication with providers, families, and school staff.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an approved Medical Assistant Certificate Program (MA), EMT, or Paramedic program required; relevant experience may count if hired before March 2023.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
• Medical Assistant certification preferred (CMA or RMA).
• Knowledge of medical terminology required.
• Experience in healthcare environment preferred.
• Experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word) or similar software required.
• Experience working in electronic medical records (EPIC) or similar software preferred.
• No minimum years of experience; 0+ years acceptable.

Responsibilities

• Actively interfaces with patients and families of Akron Children’s Hospitals.
• Prepares patients for examination; records vital signs; performs phlebotomy as needed; administers medications per policy.
• Collects data for assessment and discharge planning under a Licensed Nurse direction.
• Collects, processes, and submits laboratory specimens per policy.
• Communicates patient findings to the Provider or Licensed Nurse using proper documentation.
• Documents care accurately within the school medical record.
• Performs department-specific duties (POCT, hearing/vision screenings, etc.).
• Performs routine tasks and general office duties (faxing, copying, filing).
• Maintains examination rooms (cleaning, stocking).
• Develops positive relationships with patients, families, school personnel and colleagues.
• Completes all assignments during scheduled working hours.
• Follows safety policies to ensure a safe care environment.
• Performs any other duties assigned.
