Job summary

School Nutrition Services is seeking a part-time Food Service Assistant for Dogwood Middle School in Richmond, VA. The role involves preparing and serving meals in a school kitchen, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring compliance with health and safety guidelines.

It is a 5.5 hours/day, 5 days/week, non-contract (183 days) position with non-exempt status. The ideal candidate has a high school diploma, up to six months of related experience, and strong customer service skills.

Qualifications

• High school education or equivalent.
• Six months of food prep/serving experience in a school cafeteria preferred.
• Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform simple math and read/write sentences.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. and stand for extended periods.
• Bilingual skills including Spanish are a plus.

Responsibilities

• Prepare garnishes and serve food items to meet quality and merchandising guidelines.
• Follow USDA and local guidelines while serving on the line.
• Receive and store food in stockrooms and coolers.
• Clean and sanitize work surfaces, tables, and equipment.
• Maintain sanitary conditions per health standards.
• Wash pots, pans, and utensils after use.
• Assist in estimating, ordering, receiving, and stocking food supplies.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
