Job summary

UPMC Passavant in McCandless is seeking a Part-Time Patient Care Technician to support the Med/Surg Oncology Unit. This role is an essential step in the Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, with two 12-hour shifts per week covering daylight, evening, overnight, weekends and holidays.

The title and salary will be determined based on education and patient care experience. Candidates with prior patient care experience are highly preferred and encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Contributes to universal unit activities within the unit.
  • Responds to call lights and telephones promptly.
  • Passes meal trays and transports patients as needed.
  • Performs UPMC core Nursing Assistant responsibilities (ADLs, bathing, feeding, toileting, mobility).
  • Conducts point of care testing and monitors vital signs.
  • Manages intake and output, telemetry monitoring, and specimen collection.
  • Performs IV/foley catheter removal and basic wound care as directed.
  • Communicates with the health care team about changes in patient status.
  • Maintains patient safety, reports equipment malfunctions, and adheres to policies.
  • Documents in the medical record according to procedures.

ANCC Magnet designated UPMC Passavant is currently hiring a Part‑Time Patient Care Technician to support our Med/Surg Oncology Unit at the McCandless location. The Patient Care Technician is a valued step in the UPMC Inpatient Patient Care Support Career Ladder, with opportunities for continued growth and advancement. Title and salary will be determined based upon education and patient care experience. Our Part‑Time Patient Care technicians typically work two 12‑hour shifts each week to cover daylight, evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday shifts. Hours may vary by unit. Candidates with prior patient care experience are highly preferred and encouraged to apply. Hired candidates will be required to attend orientation (classroom‑based and unit‑based) at Passavant prior to beginning in this role.

Responsibilities
  • Contributes to the universal unit activities including, but not limited to:
  • Responding to call lights and telephones
  • Passing meal trays and transporting patients
  • Must routinely perform the UPMC core nursing assistant responsibilities including:
  • ADLs (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating, turning and repositioning patients)
  • Point of care testing (inc. blood glucose)
  • Weights & vital signs
  • I&O
  • Telemetry monitor application/reapplication
  • HAC & PSI prevention (TEDs/SCDs)
  • Simple dressings
  • Placement and removal of restraints
  • 12 lead EKG
  • Bladder scan
  • All specimen collections
  • IV catheter removal and Foley catheter removal
  • Demonstrates the following:
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the health care team
  • Ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships internally and externally
  • Accountability for actions
  • Enthusiasm, motivation, and commitment to patients and colleagues
  • Cares for patients and self by supporting safety in the workplace and reports equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department
  • Assists with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies
  • Provides feedback to the RN regarding patient care and reports changes in patient status
  • Provides instruction to patients and their families under the direction of the RN. Constructively receives feedback and direction
  • Identifies and communicates learning needs to the unit director
  • Takes action to improve knowledge, skills and performance
  • Participates in self-review as requested by the unit director
  • Participates in project and committee work
  • Suggests and supports changes within the department
  • Assumes responsibility for assignment and views problems as challenges
  • Demonstrates awareness of behavior on the efficient functioning of the department
  • Strictly adheres to all policies and procedures relative to patient care and hospital related information
  • Complies with safety policies and procedures including standard precautions
  • Documents in the medical record according to established procedures
  • Performs assigned work in a timely and productive manner
  • Transports cardiac monitored patients within the hospital setting
  • Completes department clerical functions as needed
  • Performs in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors
  • Performs other duties as assigned
