Job summary

UPMC Passavant is seeking a Full-Time Patient Care Technician to provide compassionate direct patient care under RN supervision at the 5 East Annex Flex Unit. The role involves performing essential PCT tasks, monitoring patients, and assisting with daily unit operations.

Shifts total 36 hours per week on rotating schedules. Certification in BLS/CPR is required within 30 days of hire, with hospital training provided. On-site work at UPMC Passavant in Pittsburgh supports life-changing medical care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• One year of patient care experience or enrollment in a healthcare program with clinical rotation.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills; BLS/CPR training within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under RN direction and assist with ADLs, procedures, and therapies.
• Perform core PCT duties: vital signs, telemetry, specimen collection, EKGs, and basic dressings.
• Assist with calling lights, meal delivery, patient transport, and monitoring.
• Maintain a safe, clean environment and follow infection control protocols.
• Monitor patient condition and report changes promptly to the healthcare team.
• Document care and complete clerical tasks as needed; stock supplies and support unit operations.

Position: Full-Time Patient Care Technician

Title And Rate Of Pay Will Be Determined Based Upon Individual Qualifications, Experience, And Education. The Minimum Hourly Starting Rates For Each Level Are As Follows:

• Care Attendant: $18.19
• Nursing Assistant: $18.59
• Patient Care Technician: $18.99
• Patient Care Technician, Senior: $19.19

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assisting with ADLs, procedures, and therapies
• Perform core PCT responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings
• Assist with unit and patient needs (e.g., responding to call lights, meal delivery, patient transport, and monitoring)
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment while following infection control and safety protocols
• Monitor patients and report changes in condition or equipment issues promptly
• Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed
• Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care
• Demonstrate professionalism by building positive relationships, supporting team initiatives, and seeking opportunities for growth and development
• Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One of the following:
• One year of patient care experience
• Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare program with at least one completed clinical rotation
• Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field
• Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training
• Completion of basic information systems training
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Medication access limited to distribution to licensed nursing staff

Licensure/Certification/Clearances:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification (AHA-compliant with skills demonstration) required within 30 days of hire
• Act 34 Criminal Clearance
