Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent is required.
• One of the following: 1 year of patient care experience; enrollment in a healthcare program with clinical rotation; or a health sciences Bachelor's degree.
• Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training and basic information systems training.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care under RN direction including ADLs, procedures and therapies.
• Perform core PCT duties: vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry, specimens, EKGs and basic dressings.
• Assist with unit needs: responding to call lights, meal delivery, patient transport and monitoring.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment following infection control protocols.
• Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed.
• Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities.
• Communicate effectively with patients, families and healthcare team; demonstrate professionalism and teamwork.
• Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision as appropriate.

Position:

Part-Time Patient Care Technician

Department:

4 South Surgical Stepdown Unit

Location:

UPMC Passavant

Shifts:

24 hours per week; rotating coverage

Title and rate of pay will be determined based upon individual qualifications, experience, and education. The minimum hourly starting rates for each level are as follows:

• Care Attendant: $18.19
• Nursing Assistant: $18.59
• Patient Care Technician: $18.99
• Patient Care Technician, Senior: $19.19

Responsibilities:

• Provide direct patient care under RN direction, including assisting with ADLs, procedures, and therapies
• Perform core PCT responsibilities, including vital signs, point-of-care testing, telemetry application, specimen collection, bladder scans, EKGs, and basic dressings
• Assist with unit and patient needs (e.g., responding to call lights, meal delivery, patient transport, and monitoring)
• Maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment while following infection control and safety protocols
• Monitor patients and report changes in condition or equipment issues promptly
• Document care accurately and complete clerical tasks as needed
• Support unit operations by stocking supplies and assisting with department activities
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team to support coordinated care
• Demonstrate professionalism by building positive relationships, supporting team initiatives, and seeking opportunities for growth and development
• Respond to emergent situations and provide patient supervision or assistance as appropriate

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One of the following:
  • One year of patient care experience
  • Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare program with at least one completed clinical rotation
  • Bachelor's degree in a health sciences field
• Successful completion of UPMC Patient Care Technician training
• Completion of basic information systems training
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Medication access limited to distribution to licensed nursing staff

Licensure/Certification/Clearances:

• Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification (AHA-compliant with skills demonstration) required within 30 days of hire
• Act 34 Criminal Clearance
