Job summary

MercyOne Northeast Iowa is hiring a part-time patient access clerk at the Waterloo location. The role involves gathering patient demographics and insurance details, registering patients, and guiding them through the check-in process in the Women’s and Outpatient area.

You will handle ABN determinations, documentation, and transport/escort responsibilities while adhering to HIPAA and EMTALA policies. Strong communication and computer skills are essential.

Qualifications

• Requires ability to read, write and understand English; communicate with patients and staff.
• Completion of Medical Secretary program or other general office training preferred.
• 1 year medical office experience preferred (scheduling, insurance, or registration).
• Strong computer skills and Windows experience; familiarity with database/mainframe systems.
• Ability to convey a positive image and communicate tactfully with staff, patients and the public.
• Ability to work with diverse groups and under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Gathers patient demographic and financial information and enters into computer system.
• Assigns patient rooms and prepares documentation; transports/escorts patients.
• Answers telephone; beds assigned; communicates with house supervisor.
• Informs patients of hospital regulations; secures armbands and signatures.
• Determines need for ABN waiver; ensures patient escorts to assigned area.
• Pre-registers scheduled tests and scans information (documents).
• Adheres to safety, infection control and HIPAA/EMTALA policies.
