Qualifications

Job description

The Part-Time Archives Assistant provides support for the organization, preservation, description, and accessibility of materials held by the Tyler Junior College Archives. This position assists the Archivist with processing archival collections, maintaining records related to donated materials, digitization projects, and responding to basic research and reference needs. The position helps ensure that materials documenting the history of Tyler Junior College are properly organized, preserved, and accessible for future generations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist with organizing, arranging, and describing archival collections, including photographs, documents, publications, memorabilia, and other historical materials
  • Assist with accessioning and documenting materials donated or transferred to the Tyler Junior College Archives
  • Maintain accurate records regarding the provenance, location, and status of archival materials
  • Assist with creating and updating inventories, collection records, finding aids, and other descriptive materials
  • Assist with digitization of photographs, documents, publications, and other archival materials
  • Scan materials and create appropriate file names and descriptive information according to established procedures
  • Assist with the proper handling, storage, and rehousing of archival materials using appropriate preservation practices
  • Identify materials requiring preservation attention and report concerns to the Archivist
  • Assist with locating archival materials in response to research and reference requests
  • Provide basic assistance to students, employees, researchers, alumni, and members of the public using archival collections
  • Assist with research related to the history of Tyler Junior College and its programs, people, buildings, organizations, and events
  • Assist with archival exhibits, displays, programs, and special projects
  • Help maintain the physical organization and security of archival collections
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow established procedures regarding restricted or sensitive materials

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Assist with inventory projects and periodic reviews of archival holdings
  • Assist with identifying and documenting historical materials located in other areas of the College
  • Assist with preparing archival materials for exhibits, presentations, publications, and College events
  • Assist with projects related to the Tyler Junior College Centennial and other institutional history initiatives
  • Perform data entry, filing, scanning, and other clerical duties associated with archival operations
  • Maintain an orderly and clean archives workspace and storage areas
  • Support the Archivist and Learning Commons staff with special projects and events as needed
  • Attend staff meetings and training as required

Required Education

High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Experience

One year of college experience

Preferred Education

College coursework in history, library science, museum studies, archives, public history, humanities, or a related field

Preferred Experience

One year of experience working in a library, archives, museum, records management environment, or similar setting.

Experience working with historical materials, digitization, scanning, data entry, collections, or research is preferred.

Additional Job Specific Requirements

Position may consist of working during the day, evening, and weekends
