UNC REX Emergency Department includes 54 beds, including an 8-bed private rooms area catering to behavioral health patients, a non-designated holding area, two major resuscitation rooms, triage rooms for initial assessment, an in-department radiology suite, and a decontamination room. Our ED team cares for patients across all levels of severity, from life-threatening situations to minor injuries, as well as acute and behavioral health diagnoses. Patients with heart conditions are treated in the REX ED Chest Pain Center, the Triangle's first accredited chest pain center. Stroke care is provided by our Joint Commission certified Advanced Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. The REX ED leadership emphasizes teamwork and positive recognition in our fast-paced environment.

Summary:

The paramedic works as a member of the Emergency Department clinical team, collaborating with a multidisciplinary team to deliver age-specific care in compliance with hospital standards. The paramedic provides care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and Physician, utilizing skills approved by NC-OEMS.

Responsibilities:

1. Take directions from nurses, physicians, or advanced practice providers to implement prescribed therapies within scope of practice.
2. Rapidly evaluate presenting patients and communicate needs and care requirements to the care team.
3. Identify clinical priorities and initiate actions to improve patient outcomes.
4. Maintain a safe, respectful, and therapeutic environment, ensuring patient privacy and demonstrating professional behavior.
5. Act as a patient advocate and communicate effectively.
6. Utilize triage skills to assist in prioritizing incoming ED patients.
7. Perform basic data collection, prepare patients for exams, and communicate findings to the primary or charge nurse.
8. Facilitate blood draws and IV starts based on orders and in coordination with nurses.
9. Transport patients throughout the facility as needed.
10. Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Other Information

Education Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent.

Licensure/Certification Requirements: Completion of OEMS-approved Paramedic training and current North Carolina Paramedic Certification; BLS, ACLS, PALS certifications.

Professional Experience Requirements: Minimum six months pre-hospital experience as a Paramedic.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Ability to understand, communicate, and react effectively to the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. Must demonstrate clinical competence per Skills Checklist before performing independently.
