Job summary

UNC Health's Student Nurse Externship on the Postpartum Unit within the Women's Center at UNC REX offers rising senior ADN/BSN students hands-on clinical experience in a 50-bed unit, working with RNs, learning family-centered care, and observing multiple specialties during a ten-week summer program.

The extern will gain direct patient care experience, complete required certifications (Nursing Assistant I and BLS) before start, and participate in patient education and safety initiatives while

Qualifications

• Enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Fluent command of English for professional clinical communication.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information; report significant changes to a nurse.
• Assist with vital signs, specimen collection, skin prep, glucose checks, wound care, ROM.
• Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Support orientation of new staff and students; help with supplies, transport, and clerical tasks.
• Reinforce patient education as directed by the RN or provider.
• Assist during procedures and emergencies; support safety and infection control measures.
