Job summary

UNC Health is offering a 10-week Student Nurse Externship Program in Raleigh, NC for rising senior ADN/BSN students. The program provides hands-on, hospital-based clinical experience under RN supervision, with duties across standard patient-care tasks in a 7HV cardiac unit and related settings.

Participants will work a 40-hour week on-site, gain foundational nursing practice, and prepare for professional licensure.

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs during care and transfers.
• Frequent to continuous standing/walking.
• CPR certification required or in scope.

Responsibilities

• Observe, collect, and document patient information and report changes.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Deliver direct patient care per plan of care (vital signs, wound care, glucose checks, etc.).
• Provide direct personal care for activities of daily living.
• Support area logistics: cleaning, restocking, transporting, and assisting new staff.
• Reinforce patient education provided by the RN or provider.
• Assist providers with routine examinations and procedures, and procure equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, support patients with orientation, therapy, de-escalation, and milieu supervision.
