Job summary

UNC Health is offering a 10-week, paid summer Student Nurse Externship for rising senior ADN and BSN students. This program in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (NSICU) provides hands-on clinical experience, mentorship, and opportunities to develop essential nursing skills.

Students learn to work with a multidisciplinary team and support patient care in a high-acuity environment. The externship emphasizes clinical judgment, confidence-building, and the transition from student to licensed

Qualifications

• Fluent in verbal and written English language.
• Ability to organize and prioritize assignments in patient care.
• Basic computer skills.
• Lift and carry 40-50 lbs and assist with patient transfers.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to a nurse.
• Assists patients and families with admission, orientation, and discharge processes.
• Performs routine nursing care activities: vitals, measurements, wound care, ROM exercises, etc.
• Provides direct personal care for ADLs (bathing, dressing, feeding, ambulation).
• Maintains clean and stocked work areas and supports unit operations.
• Reinforces patient teaching and supports learning under RN supervision.
