Job summary

UNC Health offers a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship for rising senior ADN and BSN students to gain hands-on clinical experience in a high-acuity cardiovascular unit. The program emphasizes skill development, confidence building, and transition support from student to professional nurse.

Externship in the CICU provides opportunities to work with RNs, learn care techniques, and participate in patient care in a team-focused hospital environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED is required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I listed with NC DHHS and BLS certification are required.

Responsibilities

• Observe, document, and report patient information; identify and report safety issues.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care/treatments per plan of care, including vital signs, specimen collection, wound care, and ROM.
• Assist with activities of daily living and mobility.
• Perform indirect care tasks: cleaning, stocking, transporting, and clerical duties.
• Reinforce patient teaching and ensure understanding of instructions.
• Assist with examinations and procedures as needed; procure equipment during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, assist with orientation, behavior modification plans, and safety monitoring.
