Job summary

City Year AmeriCorps members coach and mentor students to help them achieve academic success, improve attendance, and develop positive behaviors within school communities. You will plan and monitor individual progress and collaborate with teachers on in-class support.

We provide 2–4 weeks of training at the start, with ongoing guidance from school staff. This is a full-time AmeriCorps position with a focus on student growth and service.

Qualifications

• Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
• Be 17-25 by July 1, 2025
• Have a GED or high school diploma, some college experience, or college degree
• Have served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program
• Agree to and complete a background check
• Be able to begin City Year by July/August 2025 (start date varies by location)

Responsibilities

• Coach and mentor students 1:1 and in small groups
• Develop literacy and/or math skills with varied activities
• Create and implement a behavior management system
• Foster interpersonal skills through daily practice and reflection
• Record and monitor student progress in City Year data system
• Create a safe, engaging classroom space in collaboration with the teacher
• Support extended day and virtual programming before/during/after school
• Lead events recognizing student growth in math, literacy, attendance and behavior
