UNC Health is offering a 10-week, paid Student Nurse Externship Program for rising senior ADN and BSN students. This MSICU exposure provides hands-on clinical experience, skill sharpening, and a pathway from student to professional nurse under direct RN supervision.

The externship emphasizes critical thinking, patient care across adult and geriatric populations, and collaboration within a high-acuity surgical/medical ICU setting.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Observe, document patient information and report changes to RN.
• Assist patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provide care including vital signs, measurements, specimen collection, wound care, and activities of daily living.
• Support indirect care: cleaning, restocking supplies, transporting items and patients.
• Reinforce patient teaching and assist in procedures as directed by RN.
