Job summary

Family Service of RI is seeking an Overnight (Awake) Milieu Counselor to supervise adolescent females (13–20) in a residential setting and uphold a safe, supportive environment. You will maintain an awake presence, respond to emergencies, and support trauma-informed care using the TST model throughout the milieu.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team, handle documentation, and assist with daily household tasks while ensuring respectful, culturally responsive care.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in a field related to Human Services, or significant residential/childcare experience.
• Willingness and capability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as scheduled.
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic issues.
• Capabilites to implement appropriate child management techniques, which may include use of passive physical restraint.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Requires valid driver’s license, reliable transportation with a minimum of 3 seats in addition to the driver’s seat and proof of required automobile documentation.
• Bilingual/ASL skills are compensated by an additional 6%, above base pay.
• Multilingual skills are compensated by an additional 8%, above base pay.

Responsibilities

• Maintain an awake presence throughout the shift and ensure the safety, well-being, and security of all residents.
• Provide trauma-informed care and implement Trauma Systems Therapy (TST) in the milieu setting.
• Document shift notes, incident reports, and other required records.
• Transport residents to appointments and community activities as needed.
• Provide emergency or crisis intervention techniques and follow program policies.
• Support daily household tasks including menu planning, housekeeping, and budgeting.
• Attend meetings and trainings as required.
• Coordinate with clinicians and treatment team to support residents’ progress.
