Job summary

Family Service of Rhode Island seeks Milieu Counselors to provide direct care, supervision, and trauma-informed support for adolescent girls in a residential setting in Providence, RI.

You will implement treatment plans, run daily groups, maintain documentation, and ensure safety while coordinating with clinical teams. The role requires flexible hours, a driver’s license, and strong communication in a diverse community, with opportunities for growth within FSRI.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in a field related to Human Services, or significant residential/childcare experience.
• Willingness and capability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.
• Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, racial and socioeconomic issues.
• Capabilities to implement appropriate child management techniques, including passive physical restraint.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Requires valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
• Bilingual/ASL skills may be compensated above base pay; multilingual skills may also be compensated above base pay.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct, hands-on support and supervision for youth during daily routines.
• Interact with residents to build positive, professional relationships with residents.
• Complete TST training and apply the TST model in milieu.
• Participate in ongoing Trauma Systems Therapy training and other evidence-based practices.
• Maintain daily schedule and program rules; ensure a safe environment.
• Facilitate daily groups (hygiene, activities, budgeting, meals, life skills).
• Meet daily tasks of household management (menu planning, housekeeping, shopping).
• Encourage residents’ participation in activities; monitor chores and phone use.
• Maintain professional documentation (Credible) per guidelines; incident logs.
• Transport residents to appointments and attend staff trainings.
• Provide crisis intervention when necessary and follow Handle with Care guidelines.
• Drive company vehicles as required; distribute medications per policies.
• Perform other duties; provide coverage to other residential programs as needed.
