Job summary

Houston Methodist seeks an Outpatient Coder to assign accurate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy and clinic encounters based on documentation in the EMR, while adhering to regulatory guidelines.

Requirements include RHIT/RHIA/CCS/CCA or similar AHIMA/AAPC credentials, an associate degree or higher, and at least one year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Coding Apprentice Program.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or higher in an AHIMA/HIM-accredited program or equivalent experience.
• One year outpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program.
• Certification in RHIT/RHIA/CCS/CCA/CCS-P/CPC/CPC-H/CPC-I/CPC-A/CCC/COC is required.

Responsibilities

• Accurately assign ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy and clinic encounters.
• Ensure coding aligns with official guidelines and hospital policy.
• Collaborate with care teams to clarify diagnoses and procedures via physician queries.
• Maintain high-quality abstracting and data integrity in the EHR and encoder systems.
• Operate encoder and coding software and demonstrate proficiency in office technology.
• Contribute to coding education and team knowledge sharing.
