Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking an Outpatient Coder to ensure accurate diagnostic and procedure coding for outpatient, ER, therapy, and clinic encounters based on chart documentation. The role emphasizes compliance with coding guidelines and regulatory standards.

The ideal candidate will have an AHIMA or AAPC certification, an associate or higher HIT/him degree (or equivalent experience), and at least one year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Coding Apprentice Program.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in an AHIMA/HIM accredited program, or an additional two years of experience in lieu of degree.
• One year of outpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program.
• Must hold one of the listed coding certifications (AHIMA or AAPC).

Responsibilities

• Assign accurate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy, and clinic encounters based on documentation.
• Query physicians to obtain or clarify diagnoses or procedures as per physician query process.
• Maintain coding quality and adherence to AHIMA guidelines and hospital policies.
