Job summary

Houston Methodist seeks an Outpatient Coder to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes for outpatient encounters based on documentation in the EHR, ensuring accuracy and regulatory compliance. This non-exempt role requires an AHIMA-accredited degree or equivalent experience, plus one year of outpatient coding experience and recognized coding credentials.

Collaboration with clinicians and continual quality improvement are expected.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher in an AHIMA-accredited program or additional two years of experience in lieu of degree
  • One year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program
  • Must hold AHIMA or AAPC credentials: RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCA, CCS-P, CPC, CPC-H, CPC-I, CPC-A, CCC, COC
  • Fluent in English with clear communication and ability to collaborate with clinicians and staff

Responsibilities

  • Assigns accurate ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes for outpatient encounters
  • Reviews documentation in the EHR to determine principal diagnoses and procedures
  • Maintains coding quality and adheres to AHIMA guidelines and regulatory standards
  • Interacts with coding team and stakeholders and supports physician queries as needed
