Job summary

Houston Methodist is seeking an Outpatient Coder to assign ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT codes for outpatient, ER, therapy and clinic encounters based on documentation in the EMR. The role emphasizes accuracy, regulatory compliance, and physician queries as needed.

Requirements include an AHIMA-accredited degree or equivalent experience, and one year of outpatient coding experience or completion of the Coding Apprentice Program. Certification in listed AHIMA or AAPC credentials is required.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher in AHIMA-accredited program or additional two years of experience in lieu of degree
• One year outpatient coding experience or completion of Houston Methodist Coding Apprentice Program
• Must have one of the AHIMA or AHIMA/APAC certifications listed
• Knowledge of coding guidelines and compliance, DRG/APC systems, and medical terminology

Responsibilities

• Code outpatient, emergency, therapy and clinic encounters with ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS and CPT codes
• Ensure coding accuracy and regulatory compliance
• Query physicians for diagnoses/procedures as needed
• Maintain productive coding workflow and data accuracy
• Interact with care teams and information systems to ensure quality data
