Job summary

Advocate Health is seeking an experienced ophthalmic technician to assist ophthalmologists, prepare exam rooms, and perform basic diagnostic tests. You will document patient history, assist with glasses/contact lens dispensing, and help schedule postoperative and specialist visits.

Strong communication and attention to detail are essential. The role requires ability to work with diverse patients, maintain equipment, and follow department policies.

Qualifications

• High school graduate required.
• Experience as an optometric ophthalmic technician preferred.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 6 months if required by department.

Responsibilities

• Organizes and prepares exam rooms and work areas including cleaning, stocking, ordering supplies, checking equipment.
• Prepares patient for exam and assists physician; records ocular/medical history and chief complaint.
• Performs basic diagnostic tests and visual screenings (e.g., visual acuity, tonometry, keratometer).
• Assists patients with ordering and dispensing glasses and contacts.
• Maintains and calibrates equipment; sterilizes instruments.
• Schedules patients for postoperative, surgery, and specialist appointments.
• Assists ophthalmologist with basic or routine procedures and postoperative care.
• Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific patient care and growth/development concepts.
