Job summary

Northwest Eyes is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician to join our team in Renton, WA. The successful candidate will document ophthalmic examinations, assist with patient workups, and operate ophthalmic devices in a fast-paced clinic.

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with preferred ophthalmic assistant experience.
  • Familiarity with medical coding terminology is a plus.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office and G-suite.
  • Must be able to work well in a team and multitask.

Responsibilities

  • Document and summarize ophthalmic examinations accurately.

Job Summary

Responsibilities

Work in a team‑oriented clinical environment providing outstanding patient care. Team members are responsible for accurate documentation and summarization of the ocular examination and recommendations, maintaining patient flow, and communicating appointment status. Assist Ophthalmologists by performing ophthalmic clinical functions, including patient workups and special testing. May administer eye medications, instruct patients on care, apply dressings, and assist with in‑office lasers and procedures.

  • Summarize and document the Ophthalmologist’s examination accurately, charting findings, additions to the chief complaint, assessment, and treatment recommendations.
  • Maintain awareness of patient communication to repeat information or provide education materials.
  • Ensure patient understands all instructions.
  • Take and document patients’ medical histories.
  • Operate ophthalmic equipment: Auto Refractor, Retinoscopes, Phoropters, Slit Lamp, Pentacam/Topography, Wavescan, IOL master/instar, Projectors, Zeiss OCT, Heidelberg OCT.
  • Perform pupil evaluation, Pachymetry, Humphrey Visual Field Testing, Tonometry, Color Vision.
  • Conduct Extraocular Muscle Function Testing & Hirschberg Testing; Van Herick measurements, Worth 4‑Dot test, Stereopsis testing.
  • Triage phone calls following standard of care for Ophthalmology and office policies.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain ophthalmic instruments or equipment.
  • Assist patients in inserting or removing contact lenses.
Requirements
  • Basic knowledge of medical coding terminology and conventions.
  • Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office products, G‑suite environments.
  • Willing to help in all areas, flexible and effectively work in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellence in communication skills, able to convey ideas verbally and in writing.
  • Professional appearance, strong interpersonal skills, and patient confidentiality.
  • Strong organization with attention to detail.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year experience as an ophthalmic assistant; experienced COA or COT preferred.
  • Maintains appropriate education, certification, licensure, and training.
