Job description

We're a residential painting company running multiple territories across Richmond, VA. Right now, every operational decision runs through the owner. That's the ceiling we're trying to break.

We're hiring one person to run everything below the owner: production, crews, the office, and the estimating team. If you do this job well, the owner stops touching daily operations entirely and you become the person the business runs on.

What you'll own
Production and job flow
  • Schedule and sequence every job across all territories: crews, subs, materials, timing
  • Keep jobs moving from sold to started to completed without gaps, idle crews, or surprises
  • Own the calendar. If a job slips, you knew first and you had a plan
Field quality and completion
  • Walk jobs. Regularly. This role lives in a truck more than a chair
  • Run pre-job walks, in-progress quality checks, and final punch lists
  • Own the callback and rework rate. Go-backs are one of the numbers your bonus is tied to
Team leadership
  • Direct oversight of crew leads, subcontractors, the office manager, and field estimators
  • Set the standard, hold the standard, and coach the people who don't meet it yet
  • Recruit and onboard crews as we grow
Subcontractors and vendors
  • - Manage sub relationships, scopes, pricing, and accountability
  • - Materials ordering, vendor accounts, and job-level cost control
The numbers
  • Own gross margin on completed work: labor allocation, material cost, and change orders
  • Make sure job costs are entered accurately and on time, so the P&L reflects reality
  • Report weekly on production capacity, backlog, margin, and completion rates
Where your time goes

Roughly 60% field, 40% office. Mornings are often job walks and crew check-ins. Afternoons are scheduling, sub coordination, estimator support, and cleanup on whatever went sideways. Fridays are numbers and next week's plan.

Some weeks are heavier in the office. Some weeks you're in a truck for four days straight. If you need a predictable desk, this isn't your role.

Who this is for

We're open on background. We care more about how you operate than what industry you came from.

You'll do well here if you:
  • Have run production, service delivery, or field operations somewhere: trades, restoration, landscaping, HVAC, logistics, restaurants, military, anywhere the schedule is unforgiving
  • Are organized in a way that survives contact with a chaotic day
  • Are comfortable telling a crew lead their work isn't acceptable, and comfortable telling the owner the same thing
  • Pick up software and other productivity tools quickly
  • Read a job cost breakdown and know immediately where the margin went
  • Would rather fix a broken process once than work around it forever
This is probably not for you if you:
  • Need someone to tell you what today's priorities are
  • Want a role where problems get escalated up instead of solved
  • Are uncomfortable being the person accountable when a job goes wrong
Hard requirements:

valid driver's license; ability to walk active job sites including ladders, stairs, and unfinished spaces; availability during standard business hours with occasional early starts and weekends.

Compensation
  • Base salary depending on experience
  • Quarterly performance bonus tied to gross margin on completed jobs, on-time completion, and callback rate
  • Company-provided vehicle and gas card
  • Long-term ownership participation is on the table for the right operator. We're not going to define it in a job posting, but if you build this into a business that runs without the owner, you should have a stake in what you built. Ask about it in the interview and we'll tell you where our head is at.
