Job summary

American Oncology Network is seeking a Patient Financial Counselor to serve as the primary advocate for patients navigating insurance, coverage verification, and financial assistance programs within an oncology practice. You will review coverage, coordinate prior authorizations, and communicate honestly with patients about costs and resources.

You will collaborate with clinical teams, insurers, and external aid organizations to remove barriers to care while supporting compassionate conversations

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
• Associate's Degree or higher in Healthcare Administration, Business, or related field preferred
• Minimum 2 years in healthcare financial counseling, patient access, or medical billing preferred
• Experience with patient assistance programs and financial aid resources preferred
• Ability to calculate and collect patients’ responsibility and insurance co-pay/coinsurance
• Knowledge of medical terminology, ICD9/ICD10 and CPT codes
• Excellent verbal and written communication for diverse patient populations

Responsibilities

• Review patient insurance coverage and establish financial responsibility estimates
• Coordinate prior authorizations and benefit verification
• Explain insurance benefits and out-of-pocket costs to patients
• Assist with forms for assistance programs and grant-funded resources
• Maintain up-to-date insurance benefits in EMR and billing systems
• Communicate with providers and staff about fiscal responsibilities
