UNC Health in Hillsborough, NC, is offering a Student Nurse Extern I program in the Emergency Department from May 24 to July 31, 2027. The ED is Level 2 Geriatric ED accredited and provides 1:1 preceptor mentoring and targeted training.

Externs work under an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice. The externship emphasizes immersion, patient care skills, and readiness for a registered nurse role, with explicit limits such as no IV/PO meds under supervision.

Formación

• High school diploma or GED required; current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
• Nursing Assistant I certification listed with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• No prior professional experience required.

Responsabilidades

• Observes and documents patient information and reports changes to a nurse or provider.
• Assists patients and families with admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Provides care activities including vital signs, specimens, wound care, and activities of daily living.
• Provides indirect care such as maintaining area, stocking, and equipment transport.
• Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding.
• Assists with examinations and procedures and procurement of supplies.
• In psychiatric settings, supports safety, de-escalation, and therapeutic milieu.

Ability to organize and prioritize

Basic computer skills

Lifting 40-50 lbs

Standing/walking frequently

Educación

High school diploma or GED
