Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC seeks a Student Nurse Extern I for the Cardiovascular Acute Care unit (May 24 – July 31, 2027). This temporary, full-time externship teams nursing students with an RN partner to gain hands-on patient care experience.

The program trains within the Nursing Assistant I scope; duties include observing, taking vital signs, basic care tasks, and patient and family support under supervision, with emphasis on safety and learning in a clinical setting.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; higher-level degree may satisfy.
Currently enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.
Licensed Nursing Assistant I and BLS certification are required.

Responsibilities

Observes, collects, and documents patient information and reports changes to RN.
Provides assistance to patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
Performs routine care tasks including vital signs, hygiene, and simple wound care.
Delivers direct personal care for activities of daily living under supervision.
Supports providers and other staff during examinations and emergencies.
