Job summary

UNC Health’s 3 West unit in Chapel Hill is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I to support nursing staff in a prelicensure program.

The extern will work with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope, performing routine care and vital signs under supervision.

This temporary full-time role offers hands-on experience in cardiovascular and nephrology care, developing clinical competencies.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma/GED required.
• Enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months.

Responsibilities

• Observe and document patient information; report changes to RN or provider.
• Assist with admissions, orientation and discharge processes.
• Provide direct patient care under RN guidance, including vital signs and basic care.
• Assist with examinations, procedures, and equipment as needed.
• Reinforce patient teaching and document understanding.
• Perform routine clerical tasks and maintain a clean, stocked area.
