Job summary

UNC Health is offering a Student Nurse Extern I program for prelicensure nursing students. You will work with an RN partner within the Nursing Assistant I scope of practice, gaining hands-on clinical experience.

The extern will provide direct and indirect patient care in hospital, clinic, or home health settings under supervision. This temporary full-time role supports learning and professional growth while meeting program dates in Chapel Hill.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months from start of externship.
• Nursing Assistant I credential listed by NC DHHS.
• BLS certification required.

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information; reports significant changes to RN or provider.
• Assists patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge.
• Performs care/treatments per plan of care including vital signs, wound care, glucose checks, and basic ADLs.
• Provides direct personal care for routine activities of daily living.
• Performs indirect care tasks such as room setup, restocking, cleaning, and equipment transport.
• Reinforces patient teaching and documents understanding.
• Assists providers with examinations, procedures, and equipment procurement during emergencies.
• In psychiatric settings, aids in behavior modification, provides support to patients and families, and assists with safety.
