Job summary

UNC Health in Chapel Hill, NC, is seeking a Student Nurse Extern I for the period May 24 – July 31, 2027. You will work with an RN partner to gain hands-on patient care experience within a hospital/clinical setting.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months, possess a high school diploma or GED, and hold a Basic Life Support certification.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required; current enrollment in an accredited prelicensure nursing program with anticipated graduation within 12 months time from the start of student nurse externship.
• Listed as Nursing Assistant I with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Responsibilities

• Observes, collects, and documents patient information while providing care and promptly reports significant changes to a nurse or provider.
• Provides assistance to patients and families during admission, orientation, and discharge of the patient care experience.
• Provides direct personal care for routine activities of daily living as outlined in the plan of care.
• Assists in routine examinations and procedures, and procurement of equipment and supplies during emergencies.
• Reinforces routine teaching and documents patient understanding of instructions.
