Job summary

Atrium Health is seeking a Nurse Extern to support registered nurses in delivering safe, age-appropriate patient care. The role involves assisting with ADLs, mobility, nutrition, and admissions/discharges under RN supervision.

You will collect routine vital signs, document measurements, and help with workflows on the unit while maintaining infection control and patient safety. This position provides clinical exposure and hands-on practice for students in accredited nursing programs.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Active enrollment in an accredited nursing program and good academic standing.
• Maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale.
• Completed foundational nursing coursework prior to supervised clinical practice.

Responsibilities

• Assist with activities of daily living and personal care while ensuring dignity and safety.
• Support mobility, transfers, and use of assistive devices under RN direction.
• Record routine clinical measurements and report abnormalities to the RN.
• Assist with nutrition, feeding, and monitoring diet tolerance as directed.
• Maintain a clean, infection-controlled environment and safety standards.
• Observe changes in patient condition and report to RN promptly.
• Educate patients and families on safety measures and procedures as directed.
• Perform clerical tasks and basic EMR data entry and supply retrieval.
• Manage supplies and equipment and ensure proper functioning.
• Perform competency-validated skills such as 12-lead ECGs, venipuncture, and specimen collection underRN supervision.
