Job summary

Sargent & Lundy in Chicago, IL, is seeking a senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Nuclear Power Group in a hybrid role located in Downtown Chicago with remote work two days a week.

You will apply thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics to uprate projects, lead evaluations, mentor staff, and interface with clients to deliver rigorous calculations, reports, and cost proposals.

Qualifications

• BSME from ABET-accredited program with thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics.
• 10+ years in the nuclear power industry.
• Experience with nuclear power uprates and turbine retrofit projects.
• Practical knowledge of balance of plant systems, heat balance, pumps, exchangers, and cooling systems.
• Strong technical reporting and MS Office skills.
• Working knowledge of codes, standards, and regulations for nuclear plant design.

Responsibilities

• Develop and lead licensing basis evaluations for uprate projects.
• Apply thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid mechanics to power plant engineering.
• Perform consulting work for nuclear uprates.
• Prepare calculations on heat balances, pumps, exchangers, and residuals to support client recommendations.
• Prepare task reports and equipment evaluations for client reviews.
• Size equipment and optimize designs for uprates.
• Interface with clients and project teams on status and discussions.
• Develop engineering proposals and cost estimates.
• Mentor junior staff on nuclear power engineering tasks.
• Review others' work, including calculations and drawings.
• Attend client meetings and site walkdowns to validate scope.
